So I did.
Influenced by my good friend Roxanne, I decided to try something new: a muslin journal. I'm not exactly sure how to go about this, but hers looks so devine that I really want to try. I started by tearing an old pillowcase into sections, this one is 13" x 10.5", but there will probably be pages of different sizes in here, as I like the look of the one Roxanne is working in. I like the look of the raggedy edges of the pages, too.
This morning I soaked them in a tea/coffee solution to stain them brownish. Then, when they were dry, I stamped the sun using a rubber stamp that I carved myself. I watercolored all around the sun and glued dyed tissue paper to the other page. I collaged photos to the fabric and used some more rubber stamps. This page is a work-in-progress and I don't know where else I may go with it. I know I want to do some stitching of some sort here and I think I want to use some sort of stiffener on the fabric as I find it much too limp for my liking. Maybe I will use an acrylic paint to the reverse side for extra structure.
I will set it aside for a day or so to see what other miracle wants to appear.

I wonder if Gesso would stiffen the material if painted on the backside. It's used to prime canvases. Looks like fun. Nice you had a whole day to work on Art.
WV is, spine. will you put a spine in the journal book when done? LOL
Cris, I will try Gesso. I have some. I may paint the other sides too, I haven't decided. I may do both.
As for spine? I haven't thought that far ahead yet either! I just wanted to try a page or two today. I'm still working on this one. I may add stitching.
'spine' was my word verification. I just went with it. :))
This is a different form of art. I will have to pop over and see where you got your inspiration. I have not tried painting fabric. I made a talisman for a friend tonight. I won't post it until I give it to her so it will be a surprise. I was just thinking that it is getting cooler so we must be thinking about covering with fabric to keep warm.? tee hee.
Happy to see you doing all these fun things on fabric. I love painting fabric...and today I bought some Modge Podge and will use it on my new hard page journals I've started. Am adding fabric there too. We'll have to share and tell.
there is stuff called "stiffy" (I'm not making that up) which is for fabric - you might try that. Either way, I think this will be a fun journey for you
Lisa, this is a different form of art for me too. I don't usually do much with fabric. This will be interesting.
Lynn, I already have Mod Podge. This is what I used to adhere the tissue paper and the collage cutouts on these pages. Then I Mod Podged over the top of the tissue so that I could write on it.
Thanks for the tip, Mim. I may give "stiffy" a try if the paint doesn't do the trick. It's fun experimenting with different mediums.
This looks fun! You can try Bondaweb (think its called Wonderunder in the States!) you use it to fix your top layer to another piece of fabric. I popped over to your friend's site - no wonder you were inspired!!
this does sound like fun. I have the start on a canvas book of similar nature but the canvas is stiff once painted. Cant wait to see what happens here. be wlel, Suki
What a fun medium, so many different elements! That day sounds so relaxing!!!!
Kate, your journal page is looking great, I like the idea of using the cloth for a backing! Who's that cutie pie kitty resting up on your work table, what a sweet picture!
