It's a gray, overcast day today with snow predicted for tonight and I was feeling bore this afternoon. I have hardly any experince working with colored pencils so thought I'd give them a try. I'm not sure how I liked them. I used a photograph from an old calendar for my subject and loosely worked from that.
Watercolor seems so much easier and more effortless. In any case, here is my finished picture. Thinking about spring. Thinking about flowers. Thinking about sunlight.

Kate this is just what I needed to see today. It is blowing snow flurries all around here. Brrrrrr I can't wait to see an actual spring scene like this. I love colored pencils but my arthritis doesn't let me work with them much. I think your experiment turned out very good.
You know colored pencils are for me. I think your picture is lovely. I always loved coloring with crayons as a kid and i think of colored pencils as just a step above crayons, they have sharp points that allow me to have more detail than crayons but i think they speak to the child in me. When i draw a picture and set out to color it i feel like i've drawn a picture in my own coloring book. Stay warm. We are a little on the cool side but expecting record warm temps later this weekend...
This is lovely. I have used colored pencils and if you dont get the expensive kind they dont work so well. They glide like butter if you get the right kind. That said I like watercolors better now too. Always fun to try new things tho. Still in drought mode here. Cold frost this morning but blue skys and warmer temps this afternoon. Perfect for a bundled up walk.:)
such fun to see a spring scene in the midst of winter. we did get snow today but only about four inches. it's pretty once in awhile.
There is something so layered about colored pencils that I love. I used them for a long time but I'm impatient, and they do take time. Cris is right, the good ones are buttery, and smooth and lovely. Have fun either way,,,,and lovely to think of spring
Lovely soft look to this ilustration - if you use watercolour pencils you get the best of both worlds!
Lovely!!! Makes me long for spring......and winter isn't even here yet......
Enjoy your weekend and once again lovely painting!
So much I really like about this work.
The unusual composition, with the large branch hanging over the foreground.
The overall spring-ish feeling.
The sunlight focused on the distant landscape and dancing through the water onto the flowers.
I used to use Prismacolors and they truly are awesome pencils. So waxy-ish, and like others have said, buttery.
Oh you are definitely in the mood for spring. Must be darn cold there! Very pretty.
