The Seasons Are Changing

I usually walk for exercise just about every other day, weather permitting. My walks are often around town, which gives me a nice three mile, one hour jaunt up and down hills. Often I see things and settings that catch my attention on a particular day. Sometimes these things are sights that I pass all the time, but for whatever reason just grab my attention at that moment in time. This is one that did a month or so ago.

This is the backyard of a beautiful house perched high on a bend in the road. The owners have taken their outdoor shed and turned it into a beautiful work of art by training a rosebush up the side facing the street. They found a lovely black iron clock that they nestled in the climbing rose. Nearby is an inviting shaded seating area with wicker furniture and a table with a pretty red umbrella. All of this is surrounded by a stone retaining wall with steps leading up to the higher level. The house is a gorgeoous two story white clapboard with a large front porch and black shutters. I love this place and it is such a pleasure to pass by on my walks.

The seasons are starting to change here where I live. The days are much shorter now and finally we are getting some relief from the blistering heat and intensive drought from last summer. The rains are more frequent and as I started my walk one day this week the sun was trying to burn off an early morning fog. The earth was sparkling with dew and the scent of leaves and pine was heavy in the air. This is the time of year that I love. It makes suffering through the summer worth every moment. My morning glories are just beginning to bloom now. Very late this year, but I love them so.

I have finished my work in the Butterfly House at the nature park now. It closed to the public the last weekend in August. Soon we will be removing the mesh screen that surrounds the house frame and the remaining butterflies will be set free to migrate. Lately we have been harvesting vegetables from the garden and the produce is taken to the local shared harvest center to help those in need. There is still work to be done in the herb and flower gardens. Lots of deadheading, dividing, and removing of plants and general cleaning up is going on. Before we know it we will be planting seedlings in the greenhouse and the cycle will start again.

Great job on the painting. How fun to record your surroundings. So do the butterflies come back there each year on their own? Why do they put the mesh screen around them? Interesting job.

Hi Cris,
At this park we have the entire life cycle of the butterflies in a controlled environment where we can plant and maintain the types of flowers and plants that our butterflies need. This past summer's butterflies have already laid eggs for next year inside the house. When the eggs turn into caterpillars next spring they will already be on the plants that they need to eat and can grow without the fear of birds and other predators eating them. This way we can be assured of a new crop of healthy butterflies next year. The remaining butterflies that are in the house now will likely die if we don't let them go. They need to travel to warmer climates to survive the winter. The mesh screen will go back up in a few weeks, after the butterflies have gone away, and the eggs and cocoons that are in there now will be safe for the winter.

Very nice, your journal page, and what a neat thing these homeowners have done. Their house also sounds like it could be right up my alley.
I loved reading your explanation of how the butterfly house works. Fascinating.
Our days are getting shorter too now, and our high being only 86 today, I'm encouraged that fall truly will come! Not a minute too soon, I'll add.

Such a lovely post Kate!
I can imagine when summer is sooo hot that autumn is a perfect season.....
I am trying to welcome it since the last few years now.
What a lovely shed with roses and clock!
And your morning glories!!! WOW!
Today we will have our last warm and sunny day so I will work a little in the garden. Clear some things before autumn set in and I won't feel like working in the garden anymore......

Enjoy your walks and this Sunday dear!
Thanks for your sweet comments always :)

Your day sounds so wonderful with your walk and all you see. Yes, I love autumn also except the early dark mornings.

Don't you love walking past beautiful houses and thinking about their history, and who lives there. I love doing that - makes for a quick walk too. I love your painting of the little house, it's charming.

I too love love love this time of year - this summer was so hot and I often stayed inside to hide from the heat. The only downside is the late mornings - I love it when the sun rises at 5:30, but don't love it as much when it waits until 6:15 to rise!!
